Gold Sheen Obsidian is a volcanic glass, a silicon dioxide that cooled too quickly to crystallize and is therefore amorphous, with a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5. Its golden to bronzy shimmer sits over a black base and is caused by layers of microscopic gas bubbles or tiny feldspar crystallites aligned parallel to the original lava flow; it is a natural variation of black obsidian formed in the same volcanic process. Obsidian has the same prehistoric use context as black obsidian, notably in Mesoamerica. The primary source is Mexico.
