The Rhodonite Heart runs from a dusty rose body broken by branching black manganese oxide veining through to pieces that read almost entirely black with only traces of pink showing through, and warm tan and khaki tones appear in the matrix of some stones. Where the pink dominates, the dark seams cross the surface in irregular tracery and the contrast is sharpest against the palest areas. The lobes are full and rounded with a shallow central cleft and a soft, blunt point, and the surface carries a clean gloss over most of the body. The Heart fills the centre of the palm and holds a noticeable weight for its size.

Rhodonite is a manganese silicate crystallizing in the triclinic system at a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5. Its rose to deep pink colouration comes directly from manganese within the crystal structure, and the characteristic black veining is manganese oxide formed as the material weathers, which is why the dark seams follow fracture and grain rather than depositional layering. In heavily weathered material the oxide can take over most of the stone, producing pieces that read predominantly black rather than pink. That veining is the definitive visual identifier for the stone and the clearest way to distinguish it from rhodochrosite, a softer manganese carbonate with concentric pink and white banding. Rhodonite occurs in metamorphosed manganese deposits and is typically found in massive form rather than as distinct crystals, which is what makes it well suited to carving and polishing, though crystalline material from Franklin, New Jersey is highly collectable. The name derives from the Greek rhodon, meaning rose, and the stone was quarried at scale in the Ural Mountains, where it was used extensively in Imperial Russian architectural and decorative work.
