Geological Information
Sodalite is a sodium aluminium silicate chloride (Mohs 5.5-6, cubic system), a feldspathoid mineral rather than a true feldspar. Its blue colour comes from sulphur and iron impurities, with characteristic white calcite veining. It is frequently confused with lapis lazuli, but Sodalite lacks lapis's pyrite gold flecks and shows a more uniform blue with white veining. A large deposit found in Ontario, Canada, in 1891 during a royal visit became known as Princess Sodalite, and Hackmanite is a tenebrescent variety that shifts colour under UV light. Principal sources include Brazil and Canada, along with Namibia, India and Russia.
