Geological Information
Unakite is a metamorphic rock rather than a true mineral, composed of pink orthoclase feldspar, clear quartz and green epidote in fairly consistent proportion, at a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7. The pink comes from the feldspar and the green from the epidote, and the interplay of the three minerals produces its characteristic patterning. It takes its name from the Unaka Mountains of North Carolina, where it was first identified, and although it is frequently sold as Unakite Jasper in the trade, it is geologically a granite-based metamorphic rock and not a jasper at all.
