Moldavite is a tektite, a natural silica glass formed from terrestrial rock melted and ejected during a meteor impact, with a Mohs hardness of 5.5-7 and no crystalline structure. Its olive to forest green colour comes from its iron and aluminium silicate composition, and genuine pieces show a distinctive surface texture of flow folds, bubbles, and pitting formed during flight through the atmosphere. Moldavite formed roughly 15 million years ago from the Nördlingen Ries meteor impact in present-day Germany, with the resulting glass falling across the Bohemian Plateau of the Czech Republic, the only place genuine moldavite is found.
