Geological Information
Hematite is iron oxide, Fe2O3, crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 5.5 to 6.5, and it is the principal ore of iron as well as the mineral responsible for the colour of red rock, rust and red ochre. Natural hematite is identified by its steel-grey to black metallic lustre in polished form together with a distinctive red-brown streak when scratched across unglazed ceramic, and that streak is where the name comes from, the Greek haema meaning blood. Its high density is diagnostic in itself: a piece of hematite is noticeably heavier than a silicate stone of identical size, which is a practical authenticity check. Natural hematite is non-magnetic, distinguishing it from the magnetic sintered material sold as Hematine or as Magnetite, which is man-made and belongs to a separate category. The mineral is among the oldest in human use, with hematite red ochre found at sites over 100,000 years old, polished into mirrors by the ancient Egyptians, and reputedly rubbed over the body by Roman gladiators.
