Hermetic Tarot Deck

Hermetic Tarot is Godfrey Dowson's black and white deck, drawn to carry the esoteric system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn on the face of the cards themselves. Each card is dense with sephirotic, angelic, geomantic, numerical and kabbalistic notation worked directly into fine grey and black line. The accompanying booklet adds card meanings by Dowson and Stuart R. Kaplan, instructions for the ten-card Celtic Cross, a chart of the ten spheres, and a diagram setting the twenty-two Hebrew letters against the twenty-two Paths of the Tree of Life.

This deck asks something of the reader. The astrological and kabbalistic attributions are not printed as keywords to look up later; they are part of the picture, so a reading opens up in proportion to how much of the Golden Dawn material the reader already carries. Working in a single ink puts the light and dark of a card at equal weight, which means nothing is emphasised by colour and the eye has to find the structure for itself. It suits a serious student of the Western esoteric tradition, and it makes a poor first deck for precisely the same reasons.
