Geological Information
Nephrite is one of the two distinct minerals correctly sold as jade, the other being jadeite. It is an amphibole-group mineral, a calcium magnesium iron silicate crystallising in the monoclinic system at Mohs 6 to 6.5, and its interlocking fibrous crystal structure gives it exceptional toughness well beyond what that hardness figure suggests. That toughness, rather than hardness, is why nephrite was the preferred tool-making material across many Neolithic cultures. The green comes from iron content, and the same fibrous structure produces the waxy lustre that distinguishes nephrite from jadeite at a glance. Its cultural record is among the deepest of any stone: over seven thousand years of primacy in China, where the character yu encompasses aesthetic, moral and spiritual meaning; Maori pounamu in New Zealand, worked into tools, weapons and the hei-tiki; and extensive ceremonial use across pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. British Columbia in Canada is now the dominant commercial source, with further material from New Zealand, Russia, Australia and historically China.
