Geological Information
K2 Stone is a feldspathic granite carrying orbicular inclusions of brilliant blue azurite, with some faint green malachite, at roughly Mohs 6 to 6.5. The azurite spheres formed as a secondary mineral after the granite, which contains feldspar and biotite, had solidified, so the blue orbs are a natural mineral combination rather than a dye or coating; it is a granite, not a jasper. It is a rare composite found only at the base of K2 Mountain in the Karakoram Range of Pakistan, after which it is named, and is sometimes called the stone of heaven for the way it pairs earthy granite with sky-blue azurite. The material is sourced exclusively from the K2 region of Pakistan.
