Geological Information
Kambaba Jasper, sometimes sold as Crocodile Jasper, is a stromatolite: fossilised colonies of cyanobacteria, among the oldest known life forms on Earth, preserved in silicon dioxide at a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7. The dark circular patterns that define the material are fossilised microbial mat structures, cut through at whatever angle the block was sawn, which is why they appear as rings, ovals, and partial arcs rather than uniform circles. Some stromatolite material is estimated at over three billion years old, placing it among the oldest organic structures available in any form. The material is natural and requires no treatment.
