Lepidolite is a potassium lithium aluminium silicate of the mica family, monoclinic in system, with a Mohs hardness of only 2.5 to 3, placing it among the softest stones in general retail circulation. The lilac to pink-purple colouration comes from manganese, though the mineral also occurs colourless, yellow, and grey. Its characteristic sparkle is structural rather than an inclusion effect: micas grow as thin stacked sheets, and light reflecting from those internal planes produces the glitter seen across a polished face. Lepidolite is one of the principal lithium ores in the Earth's crust, the same element behind lithium-ion battery technology, and it commonly occurs alongside tourmaline. The name derives from the Greek lepidos, meaning scale, after the plated appearance of the mica, and the mineral has a documented history in Chinese folk medicine.
