Lepidolite is a mica, a potassium lithium aluminium silicate at Mohs 2.5-3 in the monoclinic system, which places it among the softest stones in general circulation. The lilac to pink-purple colour comes from manganese, though the mineral also occurs colourless, yellow, and grey. The characteristic sparkle is structural rather than applied: micas grow in thin stacked sheets, and light reflecting off those internal planes produces the glitter. Lepidolite is one of the principal lithium ores in the Earth's crust, the same element that powers lithium-ion batteries, and it is frequently found in association with tourmaline. The name comes from the Greek lepidos, meaning scale, after the scaly appearance of the mica plates, and the mineral has a documented history of use in Chinese folk medicine.
