Geological Information
Mahogany Obsidian is a volcanic glass, a silicon dioxide that cooled too quickly to crystallize and is therefore amorphous, with a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5. Its black and red-brown banding comes from hematite or iron oxide inclusions within the glass, with the pattern reflecting variations in iron content in the original lava flow. It shares the same prehistoric volcanic-glass context as black obsidian. Sources include Mexico and the USA.
