Medieval Cat Tarot
Product Description
Medieval Cat Tarot casts cats as the figures of traditional Tarot, dressed and posed in the manner of Renaissance portraiture. The cards are painted in deep reds, golds and browns and framed with ornate gilt-style borders, giving the deck the look of a small illuminated manuscript. A booklet of instructions accompanies the set.
The joke is carried lightly enough that the deck still works as a working deck. Esoteric symbolism sits where a reader expects to find it, and each card's meaning is rendered plainly enough that someone new to Tarot can follow the scene without a reference to hand. What the cats add is distance: it is easier to look steadily at a difficult card when the figure acting it out is an aristocratic tabby. The result reads as a real deck with a sense of humour rather than a novelty.
