Black Tourmaline, known by the mineral name Schorl, is an iron sodium borosilicate of the tourmaline group, with a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5 and a trigonal structure. Its black colour comes from a high iron content, and Schorl is the most abundant tourmaline variety, found in granites, pegmatites, and metamorphic rocks worldwide. It has strong piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties, developing an electric charge and attracting dust when rubbed or heated, a demonstrable effect that has seen tourmaline used in scientific instruments since the eighteenth century.
