Its blue-green to teal colour comes from the copper content, and it forms in arid, copper-rich environments. South American deposits held documented sacred significance for pre-Columbian Andean cultures including the Inca, Moche, and Tiwanaku, who used turquoise in ceremonial objects, jewellery, and offerings. Most commercial turquoise is stabilised with resin to harden the naturally porous matrix and preserve its colour, a standard and accepted practice, and natural unstabilised material also exists.
