Geological Information
Grey Moonstone is an orthoclase feldspar at Mohs 6 to 6.5, showing the soft floating blue-white glow called adularescence within a smoky grey body. The effect is caused by light scattering between thin alternating layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar that form as the stone cools, and the phenomenon is named after Adularia, a moonstone locality in the Swiss Alps. True moonstone like this is distinct from Rainbow Moonstone, which is a white labradorite. Moonstone carried a lunar association in ancient Rome and Greece, where Romans believed it was formed from solidified moonbeams, and it featured prominently in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Art Nouveau jewellery. The material is sourced mainly from India, with further moonstone from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Madagascar and Australia.
