Moss Agate is a chalcedony variety of the Quartz family, silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal crystal system. Its translucent to milky white base carries green, red, or black moss-like inclusions formed by mineral matter, primarily chlorite or hornblende, growing through the silica matrix. Despite the name these inclusions are mineral, not organic, so there is no actual moss or plant material in the stone. It is a natural, untreated material. It has been used across Native American, Indian, and European agricultural traditions as a stone of growth and harvest. Origins: India, Brazil, the USA, Central Europe, and Uruguay.
