It was identified and named in 2017 by mineral hunter Erik Rintamaki, the name deriving from \"Yooper,\" the term for residents of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and it is also marketed as Emberlite. The fluorescence is natural and intrinsic to the sodalite, and no ultraviolet light source is included.
