Rainbow Fluorite is a halide mineral, calcium fluoride, with a Mohs hardness of 4 and a cubic system; its banded purple, green, blue, and clear colour zones each record a different trace impurity at a stage of growth, so the banding is a natural growth record. At Mohs 4 it is softer than most commercially traded stones and is sensitive to heat and strong acids. This upright, tapered form is variously referred to as a Tower, an Obelisk, or a Point. Origins: China is the primary commercial source, with additional material from Mexico, the USA, the UK, and South Africa.
