Smoky Quartz is a member of the Quartz family, silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal system; its brown to grey smoky colour comes from natural irradiation acting on trace aluminium in the crystal. Very dark, near-black material from Brazil is sometimes artificially irradiated to deepen the colour, so darker stones may be colour-enhanced. This upright, tapered form is variously referred to as a Tower, an Obelisk, or a Point. Origins: Brazil, Scotland, the USA, Switzerland, and Madagascar.
