Its golden to bronzy shimmer sits over a black base and is caused by layers of microscopic gas bubbles or tiny feldspar crystallites oriented parallel to the original lava flow, which reflect light as a sheen. It is a natural variation of black obsidian formed in the same volcanic process, when silica-rich lava cools too quickly for crystals to develop.
