The banding runs in broad parallel sweeps of cream, soft grey, tan and warm brown, following the curve of the stone rather than cutting straight across it, and the boundaries between bands are crisp where the mineral content shifted sharply and diffuse where it did not. The polish is high and the surface is cool and glassy.

Banded Agate is the foundational agate form, a microcrystalline chalcedony of the quartz family, silicon dioxide crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 7, deposited in alternating silica layers of varying mineral content. The bands form as silica-rich hydrothermal fluids fill cavities in host rock, each layer recording a separate deposition event, which is why the sequence can be read as a history of the cavity. Alternating cream, brown, grey and red tones arise from the mineral traces present at each stage. Some commercial banded agate is dyed to intensify colour; this material shows the muted natural earth tones of undyed stone. Agate is among the oldest documented gemstones in human use, named by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus after the Achates River in Sicily and worked extensively across ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome for seals, amulets and inlay. It is one of the most widely distributed minerals on Earth, with commercial material from Brazil, India, the USA, Mexico and historically Germany.
