Carnelian Worry Stone - 1.75 inch

Carnelian Worry Stone cut to a smooth oval with a thumb hollow across one face. The colour runs from a warm amber through burnt orange into deep russet, cloudy rather than evenly saturated, and held up to a lamp the whole stone glows through with the colour appearing to sit at varying depths inside it. The polish is high and the surface is cool and very smooth.

Carnelian is traditionally the stone of starting, associated with creative work and with getting past the point of hesitation. It is commonly kept on a work surface within reach, held at the beginning of a session, or given to someone in the early stages of something. It is also among the oldest continuously worked gemstones anywhere, which gives it more history than most stones at this price point.

Geological Information
Carnelian is a chalcedony variety within the quartz family, silicon dioxide crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 7, coloured orange to red-orange by iron oxide impurities distributed through the microcrystalline silica. Heat treatment is common and standard practice: untreated carnelian tends toward a brownish orange, and heating produces the vivid red-orange the stone is commercially known for. Some material sold as carnelian is dyed agate, and there is a practical test that separates them, since genuine carnelian shows a cloudy diffuse colour distribution when held to light while dyed agate shows colour concentrated along band lines. Carnelian was chosen for seals across the ancient world specifically because wax does not stick to it, and it appears in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome, in Tutankhamun's tomb, and as one of the twelve stones of the High Priest's breastplate in Hebrew tradition. Commercial material comes from Brazil, India, Madagascar, Uruguay and Germany.
