Fluorite Worry Stone cut to a smooth oval with a thumb hollow across one face. The colour arrives in bands rather than evenly, soft green and violet sweeping through near-colourless zones in the order the crystal grew, and the material is transparent enough at the thinner edges to read the banding right through the body of the stone. The polish is very high and the surface is glassy and cold.

Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, crystallising in the cubic system, and it is the mineral that defines position 4 on the Mohs scale itself. Its colour comes from trace impurities including rare earth elements together with natural irradiation acting on electron defect centres during growth, and the zoning records successive growth phases, which is why the bands read as a sequence rather than a pattern. The word fluorescence derives from this mineral, the first ever observed to glow under ultraviolet light. Dyed fluorite exists and is recognisable by colour that is uniformly saturated and lacks natural zoning; this material shows genuine growth banding. Fluorite was carved in ancient Egypt, Rome and China, and Roman murrhine vessels cut from fluorite and banded agate ranked among the most prized luxury objects of the ancient world, while English Blue John from Derbyshire has been mined continuously for over three hundred years. China is the primary commercial source, with further material from Mexico, South Africa, the USA, the UK, Germany and Argentina.
