Geological Information
Goldstone is a man-made glass rather than a natural mineral, and this is disclosed as a matter of course. It is produced by dissolving copper oxide into molten silica glass and cooling it in a controlled low-oxygen environment, conditions under which octahedral copper crystals form and precipitate through the matrix; those crystals are what produce the sparkle, reflecting light from countless flat faces suspended inside the glass. The material originated in seventeenth century Venice and is traditionally attributed to the Miotti family of Murano glassmakers, who held an exclusive licence for its production, and it carries an association with medieval alchemy and the pursuit of transmuting base metals into gold. The reddish-brown copper variety is the original and most common; blue, green and purple versions substitute cobalt or manganese. Production is now primarily in China, with the material remaining part of the Murano glass tradition.
