Bloodstone, also called Heliotrope, is a chalcedony variety of the Quartz family (silicon dioxide, Mohs 7, trigonal system), with a dark green base coloured by chlorite and red spots from iron oxide that resemble drops of blood against the green, which is the source of its name. It has a long history of use in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and medieval Christian tradition associated the red spots with the blood of Christ, making carved religious bloodstone objects historically significant.
