Geological Information
Despite its name, Dragon Blood Jasper is not a true silica-based jasper but a composite metamorphic rock made up of green epidote with red piemontite inclusions, with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7. The deep green colour comes from the epidote content, while the red patches and streaks are produced by piemontite or iron oxide, and the alternating pattern between the two creates the distinctive dragon-scale effect the stone is prized for. It is a relatively recent commercial discovery, first identified and mined in South Africa in the late twentieth century, and carries no ancient historical tradition despite its dramatic appearance and evocative name. Also sold under the trade name Dragon Blood Stone, this material is genuinely sourced from South Africa and Australia.
