Rainbow Moonstone is sold universally under this trade name but is technically a white labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar within the feldspar family rather than a true orthoclase moonstone, with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5. Its vivid blue-white flash, known as adularescence, is caused by light diffracting between lamellar albite and orthoclase layers within the feldspar, and it is typically stronger and more visible than the flash of classic cream moonstone. It carries the same lunar tradition as moonstone, with a modern association leaning further into intuition and psychic work, likely due to its more dramatic flash. The primary commercial source is India, with additional material from Sri Lanka and Madagascar.
