Petrified Wood forms when ancient wood is gradually replaced by silica, molecule by molecule, while the original cellular structure is preserved, producing a silicon dioxide pseudomorph (Mohs 7) that retains the grain of the wood in brown, red, grey, yellow and white. The process takes place over millions of years in silica-rich groundwater; the Arizona Petrified Forest contains trees from the Triassic period, roughly 225 million years old. It has been valued across many cultures as a link to ancient time, and is held as sacred ancestral material in the Native American traditions of the Southwest. Principal sources include the USA, particularly Arizona, along with Madagascar, Indonesia, Argentina and Egypt.
