Geological Information
Red Agate is a microcrystalline quartz, a chalcedony variety, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7, with red colour from iron oxide. Natural red agate forms where iron-rich fluids colour the chalcedony during formation, and a significant share of commercial material is colour-treated from paler grey or banded chalcedony using the long-established Idar-Oberstein process; both natural and treated material are stable. It has a long history across Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Roman cultures as a protective and energizing stone, often carved into seals and amulets. Primary sources include Brazil, with further material from India and Germany.
