Geological Information
Lapis Lazuli is a rock made up chiefly of lazurite, which gives the deep blue, with white calcite and golden pyrite. It is soft at Mohs 5 to 6. The Afghan deposit at Sar-e-Sang has been worked for over 6000 years, among the longest continuously mined sites known, and ground lapis once produced ultramarine, the most valuable blue pigment in Renaissance painting. A significant amount of material sold as lapis is imitation, including dyed jasper, dyed howlite, sodalite and glass, and lower-grade lapis is sometimes wax or polymer impregnated; genuine material shows lazurite blue with calcite veining and pyrite flecks. The classic source is Afghanistan, with further deposits in Chile and Russia.
