Dumortierite is an aluminium borosilicate with an orthorhombic crystal system and a Mohs hardness of 7-8.5, placing it among the harder stones used for carved and cut pieces. It occurs typically in massive form with a silky to vitreous lustre, and its blue to violet-blue colour comes from iron. The mineral is frequently found in association with quartz, and dumortierite quartz is a common form in retail. It was named after the French palaeontologist Eugène Dumortier and carries little in the way of ancient tradition, having been described only in the nineteenth century. Deposits are worked in Brazil, Namibia, Madagascar, France, the USA, and Austria; the supplier states India as the country of origin for the finished piece, which reflects assembly rather than the source of the stone.
