Its pink to deep rose red colour comes directly from manganese content, and the concentric pink and white banding seen in polished material is among the most recognisable patterns in the retail crystal market. The name derives from the Greek rhodon, rose, and chros, colour. The most prized material comes from Argentina, where Rhodochrosite was deposited in ancient Inca silver mines and later rediscovered by the Spanish; the Inca called it Inca Rose. Further deposits are worked in South Africa, Colorado in the USA, Peru, and China, with this piece sourced from Argentina.
