Geological Information
Petrified Wood is silicified wood, a silicon dioxide pseudomorph at Mohs 7, formed when ancient timber is replaced by silica molecule by molecule while the original cellular structure is preserved intact. The process takes place over millions of years in silica-rich groundwater, and because the replacement is gradual enough to copy the wood cell by cell, growth rings, grain direction and even bark texture can survive into the finished stone. Colour comes from the trace elements present in the groundwater during replacement, producing browns, reds, greys, yellows and whites. The Arizona Petrified Forest holds trees from the Triassic period, roughly 225 million years old. The material is recognised across many cultures as a connection to deep time, and Native American traditions of the Southwest hold it as sacred material tied to ancestry. Commercial sources include Arizona in the USA, Madagascar, Indonesia, Argentina and Egypt.
