Pink Jasper, more precisely Pink Porcelain Jasper, is a fine-grained rhyolite with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7, and despite the jasper trade name it is an igneous volcanic rock rather than a silicon dioxide chalcedony. The pink and tan tones come from trace iron within a feldspar-quartz matrix, with the banded pattern reflecting variation in mineral distribution as the rock formed. The material is natural and requires no treatment. There is no distinct ancient tradition attached to this specific trade name, though China has long-standing traditions of working fine-grained pink stone in lapidary and carving. China is the primary commercial source.
