Geological Information
Tree Agate is a chalcedony variety of the Quartz family (silicon dioxide, Mohs 7, trigonal system), with an opaque white base carrying green dendritic inclusions from chlorite or celadonite. The opaque white body with branching green inclusions gives a strong visual resemblance to a tree or branch silhouette, and it is sometimes sold as White Moss Agate. It is often confused with Moss Agate, but Tree Agate is opaque white with green inclusions, whereas Moss Agate is translucent with variable inclusion colours. Indian lapidary tradition has long worked Tree Agate. Principal source is India, along with Brazil and the USA.
