Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral of the orthorhombic system, relatively soft at a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4, and one of two common calcium carbonate polymorphs alongside calcite, sharing the same chemistry but a different crystal structure. Its colour ranges across white, yellow, brown, orange and blue from trace mineral impurities, with the green of this material arising from trace mineral content. Aragonite is also the mineral that forms nacre and coral, and its star-cluster or sputnik growth habit is one of its more distinctive natural forms. It takes its name from the Aragon region of Spain, where it was first described in 1797. This material is sourced from Peru, with other deposits in Spain, Morocco, Mexico, the USA and the Czech Republic.
