Geological Information
Dumortierite is an aluminium borosilicate mineral of the orthorhombic system with a hardness of 7 to 8.5, occurring in massive form with a silky to vitreous lustre. Its deep blue to violet-blue colour comes from iron, and it is often intergrown with quartz. It was named after the French palaeontologist Eugène Dumortier. The material is sourced chiefly from Brazil, Namibia, and Madagascar, with further deposits in France, the United States, and Austria.
