Polychrome Jasper, also sold as Desert Jasper or Royal Savannah Jasper, is a chalcedony of the quartz family, silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7. Its bold multicolour banding, running through vivid reds, browns, creams, greys, and greens, comes from iron oxide content and mineral variation through the deposit, and the strong contrast between zones is entirely natural. It is a trade name rather than a mineralogical one, applied to boldly coloured material found in Madagascar in the early 2000s during exploration for Ocean Jasper. Desert Jasper specifically denotes the quieter, muted sandy palette from the same deposit and is treated as a separate listing, geologically identical but visually distinct. The material is natural and requires no treatment. There is no ancient tradition attached to it given the recent discovery. Madagascar is the source.
