Labradorite Freeforms are large, hand-polished pieces in flowing organic shapes, each with a grey to dark base that flashes brilliant blue, green, and gold as it turns toward the light. The freeform cut follows the natural contour of the material, presenting broad polished faces where the labradorescence can spread in wide sheets of colour. These are substantial statement pieces, sold by weight.

Geological Information
Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar (Mohs 6-6.5, triclinic) with a grey to dark grey base and spectacular multicolour iridescence in blues, greens, and golds, more rarely red and violet. This effect, called labradorescence, is caused by light interference between thin lamellar layers within the feldspar structure. It is untreated natural material. It was named after Labrador, Canada, where it was first described by Europeans in 1770, though the Inuit had known it for centuries; Inuit legend holds that the Northern Lights were once trapped in the coastal rocks until a warrior struck them, freeing most of the light into the sky and leaving some in the stone. Note that Rainbow Moonstone is a trade name for white labradorite and is labradorite, not moonstone. This material is sourced from Madagascar, with labradorite more broadly found in Canada, Finland, Russia, and Mexico.
