Hematoid Quartz is clear quartz containing natural hematite inclusions, silicon dioxide with a hardness of 7, in which iron oxide is distributed through the quartz body as wisps, clouds, or concentrated patches of red-brown colour. The inclusions form as iron-bearing solutions move through the quartz during or after crystallisation, and they are entirely natural rather than a surface coating or stain; the quartz base keeps its full hardness. No two pieces share the same inclusion pattern. The material occurs wherever hematite is present in quartz-bearing deposits, chiefly Madagascar and Brazil.
