Red Jasper is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7, and its red colour comes from hematite (iron oxide) distributed through the silica matrix. It is one of the most widely distributed and historically used jaspers, worked in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and across Europe as a seal stone and protective amulet, and named among the twelve stones of the Hebrew High Priest's breastplate.
