Howlite is a calcium borosilicate with a monoclinic crystal structure and a Mohs hardness of 3.5. It forms as irregular nodules and is naturally white with grey veining, a chalky texture that gives the stone its recognisable appearance. Howlite was named after the Canadian mineralogist Henry How, who first described it in 1868, and has no ancient historical tradition of its own. Because it is soft and absorbent, howlite readily accepts dye and is widely used commercially as a simulant for turquoise, lapis lazuli, and other stones; this piece is natural white howlite in its true, undyed colour, not a dyed simulant. It is sourced primarily from California, USA, with material also found in Canada.
