Hematite is iron oxide, Fe2O3, with a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5, the same mineral responsible for the colour of red rocks, rust, and red ochre. The rainbow iridescence on this material is not a natural feature: it is produced by a titanium coating applied industrially to the polished stone. Naturally iridescent hematite does exist, where goethite oxidation on the surface creates a spectral sheen, but it is genuinely rare, and most commercial rainbow hematite is the titanium-treated version. That distinction matters, since the two differ substantially in scarcity and price. The base stone is natural hematite; the iridescence is applied, and is disclosed here as a matter of course.
