Geological Information
Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral of the trigonal system, soft at a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4. Its pink to deep rose-red colour comes from manganese, and the concentric pink and white banding of polished material is one of the most recognizable patterns in retail crystals. The name comes from the Greek rhodon, rose, and chros, colour. Argentine material from ancient Inca silver mines is among the most prized, and the Incas knew it as Inca Rose, believing it to be the blood of former rulers turned to stone; the Spanish later rediscovered these deposits in abandoned workings. The EX designation reflects higher colour and banding quality rather than any treatment. This material is sourced primarily from Argentina, with further deposits in South Africa, Colorado in the USA, Peru and China.
