Product Description

Rider-Waite Tarot is the deck Pamela Colman Smith drew in 1909 under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite, printed here with her original hand-drawn titles rather than reset type. The colour is flat and bright in the manner of early twentieth-century printing, and every card across both arcana carries a full pictorial scene with figures and objects in it.

Illustrating the Minor Arcana is what made this deck the reference point it became. Before it, the pip cards of almost every deck showed nothing but an arrangement of suit marks, so a reader had to hold the meanings in memory or keep a book open beside the spread. Giving each pip a scene means a card can be interpreted from what is happening on it, without breaking away to consult anything. Nearly every book on the subject written since is keyed to these images, so a reader who learns here can pick up almost any other deck and recognise the bones of it.
