Rose Quartz is a member of the quartz family, silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7, and its pink colour comes from trace titanium, iron or manganese, or from microscopic pink fibre inclusions of dumortierite or similar minerals. It occurs in two forms: massive rose quartz, coloured by those fibre inclusions, and the rarer clear rose quartz crystals coloured by trace elements. Star Rose Quartz can show asterism, a six-rayed star, when cut as a cabochon. The stone was used in ancient Egypt and Rome as a love token, recorded in Egyptian cosmetic contexts and Roman burial sites. This is natural, untreated material, sourced from Brazil, Madagascar, India, South Africa and the USA.
