Geological Information
Rainbow Fluorite is calcium fluoride of the cubic system, soft at a Mohs hardness of 4, in which multiple colour zones (typically purple, green, blue and clear) have developed in distinct bands within a single specimen. Each colour zone records a different trace impurity or radiation exposure at a different stage of crystal growth, so the banding is effectively a natural growth record. Fluorite has been prized since Roman times, its name from the Latin fluere (to flow) referencing its use as a metallurgical flux, and Roman murrhine cups carved from fluorite were among the most prized luxury objects of their period. China produces the majority of commercial multi-colour fluorite, and this material is sourced from China.
