This is a metamorphic combination of blue kyanite, an aluminium silicate, and red ruby, the red variety of corundum or aluminium oxide, at roughly Mohs 6.5 to 7 overall. Both minerals form under high-pressure metamorphic conditions and are chemically related through their shared aluminium content, so they occur together as a natural intergrowth with a striking blue-and-red contrast. The ruby in this material is typically opaque to translucent rather than gem-faceting grade. Kyanite and ruby each carry their own long-standing traditions, while the combination form is mainly a modern lapidary and collector designation. The material comes chiefly from Karnataka in India, with further sources in Nepal and Tanzania.
